Renew driving licence

A Dutch driving licence is valid for a maximum of 10 years. The date the driving licence expires is stated on this document. This can differ depending on the category. It is best to renew your licence before the expiry date. If you do not do this, your driving licence will expire and you will not be permitted to drive.

Driving licences issued as of 26 May 2018 have a new chip. In the future you will be able to use this chip to log into DigiD. The Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) will announce the date when the chip will become active.
Would you like a new driving licence without this chip? You need to submit a written request at the RDW 5 days before you renew your driving licence. Look for more information on the website of the RDW.
