WHAT IS THE DIPLOMATIC PASSPORT

Theoretically, every holder of a diplomatic passport enjoys the protection of the 1961 Vienna Convention, which guarantees diplomats to avoid arrest or search abroad. In fact, having a diplomatic passport is not enough to have immunity and inviolability, protections reserved for ambassadors and diplomats by trade - who are identified otherwise than by their passport.

More concretely, it is mainly a cut-line, speeding up procedures at airports and borders. Blue in color, it can especially avoid customs control, without guaranteeing it systematically. The following symbolic inscription appears on one of the pages of the passport:

"We, Minister of Foreign Affairs, request the civil and military authorities of the French Republic and request the authorities of friendly and allied countries to allow the holder of this passport to pass freely and to give him help and protection. "
