The Thai government is not very supportive
of mass immigration, which is due to its large population, which is why it has
many immigration posts. This in order to inhibit not only disordered
immigration, but also illegal immigration that it fights year after year.
There are 42 immigration checkpoints in
Thailand scattered throughout Thailand. There are often several checkpoints in
the same city, for example: there are 2 in Bangkok, 2 in Rayong, 2 in
Chiengrai, 2 in Phuket, 3 in Songkla and 3 in Surat Thani. The best
destinations to reach Thailand are: Bangkok, Phuket.
Most used checkpoints
In Bangkok we have: Don Muang International
Airport, and Bangkok Harbor Immigration Checkpoint who are the best known of
those who have traveled legally to Thailand. The first is an air control point
and the second is a maritime control point. Both accept only foreign visitors
with a passport valid for at least 6 months. In addition, any foreign visitor
who comes for tourism and is a national of the 49 countries with a tourist
exemption agreement with Thailand, is exempt from having a tourist visa,
provided that the length of stay is less than 30 days. These are German,
French, American, Swedish, English, etc.
Outside tourism, all foreign nationals must
hold a visa according to the nature of their trip. Another document to provide
is an exit ticket, which is a document certifying that its holder will leave
the country before the deadline given by his visa. You may also need an
international medical certificate for yellow fever vaccination, depending on
whether you have been in one of the countries declared a yellow fever zone.
At Phuket International Airport, and Phuket
Immigration Checkpoint, the two checkpoints of Phuket City, one has exactly the
same procedures as in Bangkok; this is even the case for all other immigration
control points in the rest of the country. However, these urban checkpoints are
the most stringent.
Border Checkpoints
For border control points, there are two
important cities, Chiengrai with 3 control points. Among these checkpoints,
there are 2 for immigrants from Laos: Chieng Saen Immigration Check Point and
Chieng Khong Immigration Check Point; that of Mae Sai for those from Myanmar.
We also have Songkhla city with 3 checkpoints: Padang Besar check point, Sadao
check point and Ban Prakop check point, except that all checkpoints are for all
immigrants coming only from Malaysia.
There are also checkpoints at the border
with Cambodia, exactly four. These border control posts are those that
facilitate illegal immigration in the country, unlike the urban control posts.
They are also theaters of violence, to repel immigration. Penetrating through
its border posts usually gives you a disadvantage, since most of the time it is
only 15-day tourist visas. And even when you get 30, it can only happen twice
in a year.
